Sailing from bases in conquered North Africa. American and
British Armies take Sicily. force the surrender of Italy on
September 8, and one day later are battling the German
Armies to hold an important beachhead near Naples.

The most costly battle in

Marine Corps history up to this November of 1943 takes place in the South Pacific when the Marines storm and capture the small island of Tarawa in the Gilberts. It is vital to the safety of America’s long sea lanes of communications.

28. “BIG THREE” AT TEHERAN

On November 28. 1943, the first meeting of all three of the leaders of Russia, Britain and the United States, Stalin. Roosevelt and Churchill. takes place at Teheran, ancient city of Persia. It is announced that important Soviet-Allied military plans are coordinated for defeat of Germany.

29. 2,000-TON BOMBING RAID ON BRUNSWICK

January, 1944 sees the real beginning of paralyzing destruction from the skies for all German war centers. Here, over Brunswick, a vast armada of Flying Fortresses leaves a pattern of frozen vapor trails as they prepare to dump 2.000 tons of bombs.

AMERICANS INVADE MARSHALL ISLANDS 30. AMERICANS INVADE MARSHALL ISLANDS

The beginning of 1944 sees a stepped-up tempo of assaults against Japanese Souih Pacific bases beginning with the invasion and capture of the Marshall Islands. Yanks move shoreward in an assault boat as a Jap munitions dump is hit by a Navy divebomber.
